Our Impact in 2024

Virginia Master Naturalists – James River Chapter 2024 In Review
(Infographic explanation)
The Virginia Master Naturalist program is a statewide corps of trained volunteers providing education, science, and stewardship to benefit natural resource conservation in their communities. As part of our many activities in 2024, James River Master Naturalist volunteers
(1) conducted cleanups, habitat restoration, and trail work in parks and natural areas. For example, we helped plant 600 trees at Powhatan State Park.
(2) contributed data to studies of wildlife and environmental health. For example, we conducted year-round stream monitoring at 5 sites to assess water quality.
(3) gave the community new opportunities to learn about nature from knowledgeable leaders and to spend guided time outdoors. For example, we provided educational programming at Powhatan State Park's "Bird Blitz."
Statistics above include 55 volunteers contributing 3,466 service hours valued at $116,000. We stewarded 6 sites; supported 18+ scientific, monitoring, and inventory studies; made 2,529 community contacts through education and outreach; and partnered with 11 local organizations.
